Sonoco Recycling earns NC STAR Status

Diversified packaging company Sonoco, headquartered in Hartsville, South Carolina, has announced that the Durham, North Carolina, facility of its recycling business, Sonoco Recycling LLC, has been certified in the North Carolina Department of Labor’s STAR Consultation Program.

Sonoco Recycling’s Durham team was awarded the NC STAR Award by Cherie Berry, North Carolina commissioner of labor, and Kimberly Bostic, NC STAR program consultant. 

The STAR Program is designed to recognize and promote an effective safety and health management system, and recipients have the ability to control hazards at the worksite. Through the program, management, employees and the North Carolina Department of Labor establish a cooperative relationship in the workplace.

Star participant sites generally experience from 60 percent to 80 percent fewer lost workday injuries than would be expected of an “average” site of the same size in their industries, the company says.

“Sonoco Recycling is committed to maintaining a world-class safety and health program with the sole focus of ensuring we all go home the way we arrived to work,” says Mike Pope, general manager and president of Sonoco Recycling LLC. 

North Carolina is home to roughly 150 STAR sites, and Sonoco Recycling now claims two of those sites.

The Durham facility started working toward certification in 2015, according to Sonoco.
