The Portsmouth, Virginia-based Southeastern Public Service Authority of Virginia (SPSA) has awarded an eight-year contract to New Hampshire-based Wheelabrator Technologies to handle municipal solid waste (MSW) generated in SPSA’s coverage area. The decision was confirmed at an SPSA September 2018 board meeting.
Wheelabrator has been providing service to the authority through a contract that expires Jan. 31, 2019. The SPSA voted unanimously to retain the company. The other two bidders were Recycling Disposal Solutions of Virginia (RDS) and Republic Services.
The SPSA, which serves eight localities including Virginia Beach and Southampton County, had reportedly planned to replace Wheelabrator as its lead contractor with a startup company, South Carolina-based RePower South. But the authority ended that deal after RePower struggled to meet the deadlines and terms of the agreement.
