The Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO), based in Columbus, Ohio, is offering a scholarship opportunity for graduating high school students pursuing careers in environmental science, sustainability, engineering and the waste management industry.

The scholarship is open to graduating students with a minimum of 20 credit units and graduating GED students who reside within SWACO’s district or plan to attend a college or university within the district. Eligible students must be pursuing a degree in science, environmental studies, engineering or other majors applicable to the solid waste management field.

Last year, SWACO awarded scholarships to two students to support studies in environmental law at Elon University and business and environmental science at Chatham University.

“Receiving the SWACO scholarship was important to me because it provided me with both financial support and meaningful encouragement,” SWACO’s 2025 scholarship recipient Sophia Barnes says. “It has allowed me to continue my education and reminds me of the importance of giving back to my community through responsible and sustainable actions.”

SWACO will award one student $2,500 per academic year and up to $10,000 over four years to an accredited community college, four-year college or university of their choice.

Students can apply from Feb. 1 through March 31. The award recipient will be notified by May 1, 2026.
