Bids are open to clean up a landfill containing aluminum salt cake in Benton County, Tennessee, a report by WBBJ 7 says. The city says the company that owned the landfill filed for bankruptcy and the city of Camden, where the landfill is located, took over ownership.
Camden resident Michael Melton says in the report the landfill has an ammonia smell that cause children in the neighborhood to get sick. He says in the report that this issue has been going on for seven years.
In March 2017, property owners around the Environmental Waste Solutions (EWS) Landfill site went to the regional newspaper The Tennessean to share their stories about the landfill’s hazards. Ciyt Alderman Randall Clark says in the report that the state is opening bids to hire a cleanup crew.
Clark says in the report that the city is looking to close the landfill and put a cap on it and plans to monitor groundwater at the site for the next 30 years.
The report says a contractor will be selected by the end of February and cleanup will start by the end of March.
