Tupelo, Mississippi, releases recycling bin waiting list

While the 18 gallon-sized open-top bins remain available, city officials told the newspaper there is a waiting list to receive the annual allotment of larger rolling recycling carts. Residents who wish to apply to the list must sign up at the Tupelo Water & Light collections office, according to Tupelo Chief Operations Officer Don Lewis.

 

The completed list is then forwarded to Waste Management, which will distribute the annual supply of carts on a first-come-first-served basis as recorded by the waiting list, the article says.

 

“People see them and want them, so there’s more than enough interest,” Tupelo City Clerk Kim Hanna told the newspaper. “But because of the limited supply, that’s not something we’re trying to push right now.”

 

In a pilot program that began in 2011, 500 of the rolling recycling containers were distributed for free as a way to gauge the continuing interest of local residents in curbside recycling, the Daily Journal reports.
