In 2025, Volvo Group marks 80 years in the remanufacturing industry.
The company initially launched its remanufacturing program in 1945 in Köping, Sweden, which has since expanded to develop components for on-road, off-road and marine applications in North America, with operations in Middletown, Pennsylvania, and Charlotte, North Carolina.
Volvo Group remanufactures components for numerous brands in the sustainable transportation sector, including Volvo Bus, Volvo Construction Equipment, Volvo Penta, Volvo Trucks, Mack Trucks and Prevost.
Remanufacturing, which uses up to 85 percent fewer raw materials and 80 percent less energy than new production, aims to support carbon footprint reduction efforts, according to Volvo Group.
“Remanufacturing is a cornerstone of the Volvo Group’s sustainability journey and has been since the first renovated gearboxes were produced in 1945,” Volvo Group North America Chairman Stephen Roy says. “Not only does this initiative play a significant role in reducing our environmental impact by minimizing waste, but it also supports our customers by providing reliable Volvo-quality parts at a lower cost. We are proud to have two key U.S. facilities contributing to this important work.”
Volvo Group’s remanufactured product inventory includes more than a dozen categories, including coolant pumps, cylinder heads, engines, transmissions and turbochargers.
All remanufactured components undergo inspection and evaluation to ensure they meet specifications. Certified technicians inspect for electromagnetic cracks and precision machining and complete calibration with certified gauges, dynamic testing, expert recovery and welding techniques.
Remanufactured components come with a 100 percent warranty on parts and contingent damage. When installed by an authorized dealer, there is also a 100 percent warranty on labor.
“Our commitment to remanufacturing isn’t just about business–it’s about responsibility,” says Sherman Williams, Volvo Group North America’s remanufacturing product development director. “We are proud to offer our customers a solution that not only meets their needs but also aligns with their values. By investing in remanufactured parts, they are making a positive impact on the environment and supporting a more sustainable future for us all.
