A 2009 study of mine workers reported a 5.7% increase in workplace injuries the Monday after Daylight Saving Time. There were also 68% more workdays lost to injuries, as the injuries were more severe.
Losing an hour of sleep can affect one’s focus, attention to detail, and organizational skills—all sobering reminders of the importance of building a culture of safety in the workplace.
Refuse and recyclable materials collectors have the unfortunate distinction of being on the “10 most dangerous jobs in America" list. Take a look at recent “accidents in the news” on this page for reminders of the danger faced by workers and civilians every day.
The particulars of the work make it dangerous by nature—even more reason to cultivate and improve upon a culture of safety.
Through this continuous improvement, safety can become a point of pride at a company or within an entire industry. And there have been positive trends in the waste industry, likely resulting from increased safety measures.
So what does a culture of safety look like in practice? SWANA can provide one example. SWANA has “safety ambassadors” in all 47 chapters, a safety pledge you can make, safety awards, and various other showings of commitment to safety. I think these ideas can be replicated.
